Aesthetic University in Tears: Kalu Bids Farewell

Beloved Guardian Dog Kalu is no more

Some bonds go beyond words—none more so than the one between humans and their furry friends. At the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, the heartache is palpable as the campus mourns the loss of its gentle guardian, Kalu.

From Puppy to Campus Legend

When Janith Premathilaka, a fourth-year student, first arrived, Kalu was just a playful puppy. But soon, this scruffy canine became the soul of the university—a constant companion for students, lecturers, and staff alike.

Kalu wasn’t just a pet; he was family. His soft eyes and calm presence filled the lecture halls and green spaces. He roamed freely, never disrupting a single class, yet always close enough to offer comfort to anyone who needed it.

The Fearless Rhythm Listener

Anjalee Sandamali, a fellow student, remembers how Kalu was never scared—even when the campus exploded with the loud beats of drums and percussion. Instead, he sat quietly, almost entranced, soaking in the rhythms.

Well-fed and cared for by a devoted circle of students, Kalu might have looked fierce to outsiders—but to those who knew him, he was a gentle giant. Many female students especially felt safe walking home with him by their side at night, knowing their four-legged guardian had their backs.

Fighting Illness, Holding Hope

When illness struck, the university rallied around Kalu. Students and lecturers sought treatment, prayed, and stayed by his side, hoping for a miracle. But despite their best efforts, Kalu’s health declined, and the campus prepared for an unbearable goodbye.

A Campus United in Grief

Last week, Kalu took his final rest. News of his passing spread like wildfire, leaving many in tears. A heartfelt almsgiving ceremony was arranged—a final tribute to a dog who gave so much love without asking for anything in return.

For the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, Kalu was more than just a dog. He was a symbol of loyalty, comfort, and unwavering friendship. His paws may have left the campus, but his spirit will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.
